Exercise is one of the few volitional behaviors that can alter energy balance in addition to diet. However, there is persistent belief that exercise is not effective for weight loss and maintenance. Contributing to this belief are studies with numerous design and measurement issues that influence the outcomes of exercise on weight. Evidence from controlled, supervised exercise trials will be presented and contrasted to unsupervised exercise trials to illustrate the potential of exercise to alter energy balance and exert positive influence on weight loss and maintenance.
