No known study was investigated to compare abdominal fat areas (subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue) by cryolipolysis . Therefore, we explore if it could change the cross sectional areas of fatby single unilateral cryolipolysis treatment on the abdomen.


Included were apparently healthy men or women with visible fat on the abdomen with BMI ≥ 22 and those without change over 5% of the former weight within the past 6 months. We measured the cross sectional areas of abdominal fat of 15 subjects (Female 9, 28.31 +/- 2.80 years, 25.64 +/- 0.71 kg/m2) by CT at initial and 12 week visit after single session treatment (-7 degree Celsius, 60 minutes) on left sided abdomen (Cryo-Elsa, Huons, Korea) . In addition we assessed waist circumferences, percent of body fat by BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis; Biospace, Korea) at initial and 12th week. This study was registered with, number KCT0003647. The paired T test was performed for statistics by SPSS packages for windows (version 18, USA) and, P-value less than 0.05 was as significant at both sides.


Mean cross sectional areas of visceral adipose tissue was significantly changed from 104.31 mm2 to 75.94 mm2.In addition, mean of BMI, the percent of body fat, and waist circumferences were significantly changed from 25.64 kg/m2, 33.43%, 91.05 cm to 25.49 kg/m2, 32.79 %,90.52 cm respectively.


Unilateral single treatment of cryolipolysis decreased visceral fat, waist circumferences, and percent of body fat of 15 healthy subjects for 3 months without any behavioral modification, diet, and pharmacological, surgical intervention. In conclusion unilateral single cryolipolysis on abdomen reduced central obesity and general obesity in healthy population. Larger and longer controlled study with more comprehensive abdominal approaches would be considered in the future.
